Friday 10th February 2012 NIK TURNER'S SPACE RITUAL (ORIGINAL HAWKWIND MEMBERS) Space Ritual claim to embody the true spirit of Hawkwind and, looking at the line-up, few could argue as apart from eccentric, innovative and enigmatic Hawkwind founder Nik Turner, the band also features another founder member, guitarist Mick Slattery, original drummer Terry Ollis, early keyboard player Thomas Crimble as well as bassist Jerry Richards who played guitar for Hawkwind in the 90's. A good start then… It gets better. Back in the 70s, there was the lovely Stacia and in keeping with tradition we now have the petite, nimble and attractive Miss Angel, multiple costume changes and all. However, this is very definitely not a pensionable bunch of old chaps reliving their (and our!) youth, this is a full-on two hours-plus choc full of classics including of course Brainstorm, Sonic Savages, Steppenwolf, Master Of The Universe and Silver Machine. Complete with effects, projections and lots of dry ice to take you the Space Rock Dimension, reliving the dawn of psychedelia. This is a fantastic show and tickets will be at a premium, don’t delay! Doors: 8pm Admission: £12.00 advance / £15.00 on the door. Ages 14+. Please see entry policy for info Tickets: Buy tickets online or call Ticketweb on 08444 77 1000. Alternatively pop into The Kings Head , S4 (beside Carlisle bus station) or Everything & Nothing at Mike's Tattoos Please note, this date has moved from Friday 3rd Febrary 2012 due to transport issues. Saturday 25th February 2012 FALLING RED ALEXA DE STRANGE OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE RIF- X "Falling Red are quickly becoming one of the most infamous bands to rise from Cumbria. Constantly gigging throughout the UK & Europe they have built a solid fanbase & are often described as the 'Bad Boys of British Rock N Roll'. When they were announced to play the Hard Rock Hell V Festival alongside bands such as Black Stone Cherry, Michael Monroe & Magnum, they went in as underdogs. After a performance that was described by Classic Rock Magazine as 'more swagger and attitude than the Queen Vic stage can handle' the band quickly became one of the most talked about bands of the weekend. However, 2012 is to see a remarkable change to the line up. Due to personal commitments, the band was forced to move forward without Shane Kirk & Matty Penn. As sad as this loss was to the band, they quickly began head-hunting the ideal replacements that would bring in fresh energy & enthusiasm, along with the commitment required to undertake Falling Red's 2012 gigging schedule. This date at The Brickyard promises to be something Xtra Special as the band look to showcase their new stageshow". Admission: £5.00 advance / £7.00 on the door. Ages 14+. | Saturday 31st March 2012 TONNES OF REGGAE WITH MUNGO'S HI FI Its with great pleasure that the "TONNES OF REGGAE" team can announce the booking of "MUNGO'S HI FI" and a special guest MC, to play along side local support acts which include "LOVE KARTEL" and "CRIMINAL JUSTICE SOUNDS". Since humble beginnings way back in the distant days of 2000, Mungos Hi-Fi have grown to become the UK’s number one reggae sound system. They take everything you, they and I love about traditional roots, danchall dub and reggae vibes and bring them bang up to date in their own imitable style. In that time they have played over 1000 shows (and counting) and have taken their sound, sights and subs all over Europe, nicing up the dance where ever they land. A bonafide Scottish institution, Mungos’ weekly Dub N Grub nights and their monthly residency at the Glasgow School of Art have established themselves as some of the most unique and universally popular events in the country. Their monthly club sessions and insatiable studio endeavours has seen them host and toast esteemed collaborators such as Jah Shaka, Sister Nancy, Ranking Joe, Tippa Irie, Top Cat and Warrior Queen. These very studio collaborations have seen their reputation and profile soar as they continue to release some of the finest modern roots music around on very own Scotch Bonnet label. Their initial releases on Dubhead introduced their fresh sound to the world, garnering heavy weight support from the likes of John Peel, Iration Steppas and Mr Scruff. The latter even saw fit to include smash hit ‘Ing’ on his ‘Keep It Solid Steel’ mix CD, released on Ninja Tune in 2006. So far they have released 12 EPs on Scotch Bonnet, each one selling out faster than the last and anticipation for the next release reaching fever pitch every time. Their forthcoming escapades into dubstep on their new Scrub-A-Dub imprint will continue to move their sound forward, referencing the past yet always sounding fresh. Famous not only for their selector talents and studio accomplishments, Mungos Hi-Fi have built their own sound system, putting all others to shame. Their crystal clear top and mid ranges compliment the pure bass power with ease. It’s so good that the likes of Skream, Vex’d and Digital Mystiks straight up refuse to use anything else when they stop into Glasgow. The question is - why should they when the Mungos rig sounds so good? |

Saturday 14th April 2012 BILLY WALTON BAND PLUS SUPPORTS In the history of rock n roll there is a long tradition of guitarists trading in their jobs as sidemen to become virtuoso frontmen in their own right. Early on Jimi Hendrix played in Little Richards' band and Eric Clapton worked with numerous groups like John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, Cream and Derek and the Dominos before starting his legendary career as a solo artist. Even Stevie Ray Vaughn had a stint as a member of David Bowie's touring band before going solo. There seems to be something about apprenticing with another artist that brings out the best in some guitar players. After spending years honing their craft it becomes impossible for their unique style and personality to be held back. Such is the case with Billy Walton. Since the age of 15, Walton has plied his craft in the Asbury Park/New Jersey shore music scene – most notably as the guitarist/vocalist for Boccigalupe & the Bad Boys which features Tony Amato a veteran of the Asbury scene since the 70s (the nickname ... Boccigalupe was actually given to him by Bruce Springsteen & Little Steven Van Zandt). During his time with Boccigalupe, Walton has played countless gigs in both the United States and Europe and sat in with numerous of rock luminaries including Springsteen, Gary US Bonds and Stevie Ray's backing band, Double Trouble. The 30-year old Walton's talents are no secret among everyone in the Jersey shore music scene and with the founding of the Billy Walton Band there's little doubt his reputation will grow far beyond the Garden State. The Billy Walton Band's sound is a combination of hard blues reminiscent of Hendrix, Clapton and Vaughn mixed with a healthy dose of Warren Hayes and Derrick Trucks. Live, Walton has always been an explosive performer with jaw dropping talent but with the addition of bassist William Paris and drummer Marcus Croan the Billy Walton band churns out a singular brand of funky blues that has deep roots in both the jam band musical tradition as well as the Jersey shore Walton has cut his teeth on. Walton's connection to his heroes is not just through his record collection. Over the years he has developed a close friendship with Roger Mayer, the well–known British guitar effects guru whose devices have played such a pivotal part in rock'n'roll for nearly every major player since Hendrix. But regardless of his influences or where he's from, the Billy Walton Band's ultimate appeal lies in the unique musical gifts of its founder, Walton himself, who, like his forebears is poised to join the long and storied list of sidemen whose time has come to step out front. |

Saturday 5th May 2012 THE BEAT Formed in the working class suburbs of industrial Birmingham in England in 1978 The Beat arose at a time of high unemployment and social upheaval. From the outset the band offered messages of hope and peace with an insight into sociopolitical topics would later alongside The Specials see them heralded as forerunners of the whole 2-Tone Ska movement. Ranking Roger and Dave Wakeling led with vocal duties while Andy Cox and David Steele took guitar and bass duties with Everett Morton supplying the most distinctive of drumming styles. Added to this mix was the renowned saxophonist Saxa, adding the deliciously warm Jamaican ska instrumental flavour that is forever associated with the bands sound. Having played saxophone with Prince Buster, Laurel Aitken and Desmond Dekker in the first wave of ska The Beat on formation seemed to immediately come of age. The Beat's first single was the infectious cover of Smokey Robinson's 'Tears of A Clown' which on release went straight into the National Top 10 at No.6. The record, an effortless like fusion between a number of different musical styles such as Ska, Punk, Pop, Soul and Reggae, immediately saw the band finding themselves an overnight success. Further hit singles from the first album included 'Mirror In The Bathroom', 'Can't Get Used to Losing You', 'Hands Off... She's Mine' and 'Best Friend', and with a catalogue such as this it was easy to see why the The Beat would become one of the most popular recording and live acts in the UK. Huge radio airplay followed in the US which saw The Beat head stateside and then further with world tours alongside some of the biggest performing artists such as The Clash, The Police, REM, Talking Heads, The Pretenders and of course The Specials. While The Beat could deliver with what almost seemed effortless ease songs of Love, Peace and Unity. Songs such as 'Stand Down Margaret' saw them spearhead a movement wanting real social change and multicutural inclusion. The thousands that sang along in unison with the band at nuclear disarmament marches bear testament to the uplifting feeling the band could evoke with their musical swagger and genuine care for humanity. After 3 Gold and Platinum top selling albums worldwide with 'I Just Cant Stop It', 'Wh'appen', and 'Special Beat Service' - The Beat's musical fluidity and openess, delivered in their explosive all encompassing live shows allowed them to reach hundreds of thousands of fans across the world, communicating positivity and freedom through not only their music, but their actions and genuine commitment to causes. Almost in reaction to the height of their fame The Beat to the disbelief of many disbanded with Ranking Roger and Dave Wakeling forming General Public with Mickey Billingham of Dexys Midnight Runners and Andy Cox and David Steele putting together the Fine Young Cannibals. Though both enjoyed phenomenal success, no other artist has sounded like The Beat or indeed is ever likely too. Ranking Roger also briefly joined Mick Jones' post-Clash band Big Audio Dynamite injecting his toasting and vocal style that to this day remains his trademark. After numerous offers to return to the stage The Beat returned in 2003 for a sell out show at The Royal Festival Hall with the inclusion of Ranking Jnr taking vocal duties to an accolade of critical acclaim. With Dave Wakeling heading to the US Ranking Roger alongside Everett Morton, Ranking Jnr and Mickey Billingham returned to their roots with deeper rhythms, a wall of sound that transcends time and an unwavering dedication to real unity and love that leaves the future still to be written, there can be no question... ...The Beat are back!
