Willy Mason

  Friday 18th May 2012
WILLY MASON
NINA VIOLET
I AM SPARTACUS

WILLY MASON
USA native Mason was just 19 when his first album, 'Where The Humans Eat' was released on Conor Oberst's (Bright Eyes) Team Love imprint, a record that propelled Willy to critical acclaim and had him touted as the next Bob Dylan. The album showed a young man with a tremendous, broad-oaked voice, a great songwriting talent, and a peculiar wisdom beyond his years.

Three years later, in 2007, he returned with If the Ocean Gets Rough, an album that only underlined his ability to capture the spirit of a time and a place and a generation. His as yet untitled third studio album, produced by Dan Carey (MIA, Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand) has just been completed and is set for release later in the year.

NINA VIOLET
"the kind of soaring, otherworldly harmonies Brooklyn’s Grizzly Bear get all the accolades for....as layered and lush as anything produced by Brian Wilson" - Crispin Kott, Roll Magazine.

I AM SPARTACUS
Luke Justice Telford known by his stage name I am Spartacus, is a 25-year-old English songwriter born in the shadow of Sellafield, in Cumbria.

Raised on a healthy diet of Bowie, Van Morrison and The Beatles he picked up the guitar at an early stage. Hampered by broken hearts and broken bones, his style somewhat developed to overcome the obstacles he faced in life. Into his teens he discovered Jeff Buckley, Elliot Smith and Joy Division and was mesmerised by their haunting melodies and atmospheric overtones.

  Friday 25th May 2012
WHEATUS
MATH THE BAND
CORN MO

To say that Wheatus have been through the wringer is an understatement. Lawsuits, lineup changes, interstate art heist investigations (yes, really), betrayals, intellectual property theft, physical violence, post traumatic front man Brendan B Brown could write a book.

Their debut single “Teenage Dirtbag” cracked the Top 40 BBC Official Sales Chart for a second time in March of 2011, TEN YEARS after it’s debut at #2. To date their first record has sold more than 5 million copies world wide. Any manager or record label would be happy to tout those stats to the press but Wheatus have remained unsigned and unmanaged for the last 8 years. Unlike many of their peers from the early oughts, Wheatus continue to write, record and tour 15 years after their inception, having taken control of their revenue stream with the home made “pick-your-price” download system fans can use at wheatus.com. They have released 5 Studio albums since 2000 and are currently in preproduction for album 6.

With a new line-up, Wheatus hit the road mid decade throughout the US and UK, including the sold out UK 'Get Happy Tour', and their own independent University and College Tours, which once again put the band on stage in front of tens of thousands of fans, who sing along….loudly.

Doors: 8pm.

HOUSE OF THREE HANDS
Having shared stages with the likes of Razorlight, The Futureheads, Madness, Detroit Social Club and Carl Barat (ex Libertines), House Of Three Hands had a chance encounter with Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles back in May 2011, which led to their track 'Room 502' being played on his breakfast show to millions of listeners.

The trio have since relocated to Manchester from Carlisle and have been busy writing and recording their new EP.

DEAF CLUB
"File alongside Foals, Wild Beasts and Beach House on your shelf of little bands that not only could, but did. And, in this case, will" - SWN FESTIVAL

"Ever wondered what the Cure would sound like if Judy Collins had been their singer instead of Robert Smith? Wonder no more" - THE GUARDIAN

"Formed in Wales, Deaf Club have made large strides in a short space of time. Working quickly, the band's debut EP 'Lull' has captured attention, with its moody, atmospheric songwriting proving difficult to shake off. Available on BandCamp, the EP showcases a band that sparkle with ideas. Sure, it's not the finished product - nothing at this stage could be - but Deaf Club display ample signs that they are set to evolve into something special" - CLASH MUSIC

Turbyne

  Saturday 2nd June 2012
David Kirkwood Presents:
IRON CLAW
TURBYNE
THE SHEEPWAGON
RAZORWOLF

Described in a 2007 Classic Rock article as one of the “Lost Pioneers of Heavy Metal”, Iron Claw formed in South West Scotland in the summer of 1969.

The original members, Alex Wilson (bass), Ian McDougall (drums) and Jimmy Ronnie (Guitar) were joined by singer Mike Waller (later Willie Davidson) and toured extensively throughout the UK sharing the stage with many of the established bands of the time such as The Kinks, Spencer Davis Group and East of Eden. They broke up in 1974.

Fast forward to 2009 when Texas record label Rockadrome Records re-mastered and officially released the bulk of the band’s recorded back catalogue as the self titled album “Iron Claw”. It was in response to the success of this album that the three original members decided to re-form. The band were quickly snapped up by the Californian record and publishing company Ripple Music and in October 2011 the album “A Different Game” was released internationally to rave reviews from the music press.

13 tracks of original, blues-based heavy rock are bringing Iron Claw to a new audience who missed them first time round. Now we see vocalist Gary Hair join the original band members to provide live performances that also remind us of what we have been missing! With a sell out gig in London in April at DesertFest, now is the time to see this awesome live band.

Doors: 8pm.
Admission: £5.00 advance / £6.00 on the door. Ages 14+. Please see entry policy for info.

Martin Stephenson & The Daintees - The Brickyard, Carlisle - Tuesday 5th June 2012

Carlisle Music City
  Tuesday 5th June 2012
North-NorthWest Presents:
MARTIN STEPHENSON & THE DAINTEES
THE DAISY CHAIN CONNECTION
G A WILLIAMS

MARTIN STEPHENSON & THE DAINTEES
The renowned Martin Stephenson has recently finished a sell out tour of the UK with his backing group the Daintees where they performed their acclaimed and most celebrated album ‘Boat To Bolivia’ in its entirety, 26 years since its debut.

County Durham singer-songwriter Martin Stephenson has an impressive reputation for hearty live shows and this tour followed on the success of when Martin and The Daintees performed ‘Boat To Bolivia’ in full at two sold out shows the Jazz Café three years ago.

Martin's early love of literature and music led to the formation of the first Daintees line-up in his early teens. After becoming something of a busking sensation, Newcastle record label Kitchenware signed Martin and The Daintees and sent them into the studio. After two singles, notable among which was 1982's intoxicating "Roll On Summertime", a debut album was embarked upon. The Daintees line-up at this time comprised Stephenson (guitar, vocals), Anthony Dunn (bass, acoustic guitar, vocals), John Steel (keyboards, harmonica, bass, vocals) and Paul Smith (drums, percussion). ‘Boat To Bolivia’ was released in 1986, was praised by the New Musical Express because it "builds bridges between love and hate, between cradle and grave, between folk and pop, between the past and present". The candidness and honesty of Martin Stephenson's lyrics were best portrayed on songs "Caroline" and "Crocodile Cryer".

He also revealed his appreciation of folk/blues/ragtime with "Tribute To The Late Reverend Gary Davis" as well as regular live performances of Van Dyke Parks' "High Coin". Martin Stephenson and The Daintees followed up ‘Boat to Bolivia’ with 3 albums on the Kitchenware label before Stephenson embarked on a solo career with a series of acclaimed releases for Demon Records.

In the new millennium, he released a series of mail-order only acoustic projects. He also records and tours with his swing outfit the Toe-Rags and, from time to time, a new line-up of the Daintees.

2012 has been a rebirth for the Daintees – asides from their recent successful national tour it has also marked the return of the group to the recording studio and the release of a fifth album ‘California Star’.
Martin has performed solo a number of times in Carlisle over the intervening years but this will be his first gig in the city with the Daintees for over two decades and is positively not to be missed.

THE DAISYCHAIN CONNECTION
The Daisychain Connection came together in 1986: five Carlisle lads whose brand of jangly guitar pop stole the hearts and minds of Cumbrians and audiences around the north for 6 giddy years.
Influenced by The Beatles, The Jam, The Smiths and Aztec Camera they produced sublime melodramatic moments of pop – the classic kitchen sink drama portrayed in ‘Julie Come Home’ should have seen them breaking through into the mainstream. The Daisychain Connection always did do things a little differently – from the way they organised and promoted their own gigs down to the hand-coloured demo tapes they would sell through Pink Panther records complete with lyric sheets and doodles.

They supported the likes of The Beautiful South and Runrig at The Sands Centre and narrowly missed out on a UK tour with The Housemartins.

However, a tragic blow came in April 1988 when bass player Pete Mitchell died after his Carlisle flat caught fire. He was 26. While The Daisychain went on to record a single “Bingo and Bossanova’ in 1990 some of the momentum had gone from the band and 1992 saw their last gig until a triumphant return last November to a sell out crowd at the Tithe Barn.

G A WILLIAMS
G A Williams former singer of the indie group Ten Gladioli and now a resident in Manchester has gone from strength to strength musically in recent years.

He has built a catalogue of crafted songs that cover a sweeping range of subjects as well as musical styles. His last appearance in Carlisle supporting city favourites Cosmic Cat saw him play a couple of songs which drew heavily upon his formative years in the Border City.

Titles like ‘The Ballad of Jimmy Glass’ and ‘Black Eye Friday’ prove that although he may have moved south; his roots remain firmly in Cumbria.
His album ‘True North’ is close to completion and a release date is scheduled for Autumn 2012.

Doors: 8pm.
Admission: £14.00 advance. Ages 14+. Please see entry policy for info.

Gem's Epic 18th - The Exiles, Flesh Eating Foundation, State Control, Cabbage F*ck and Here Lies Your Hero - The Brickyard, Carlisle - Saturday 16th June 2012   Saturday 16th June 2012
Gen's Epic 18th Presents:
THE EXILES, FLESH EATING FOUNDATION, STATE CONTROL, CABBAGE F*CK & HERE LIES YOUR HERO

THE EXILES
The Exiles are on a mission to inject revolution back into rock ‘n’ roll. With their own brand of ‘Maximum Punk Rock’ The Exiles can hold their own against any of their heroes, and they do!

Early 2012 after years of releasing singles and EP’s will see The Exiles release their much-anticipated debut LP ‘Same Thing Day After Day. Work. Dinner. Work. Commute. Armchair. TV. Sleep. Commute. How Much More Can You Take? One In 10 Goes Mad. One In 5 Cracks Up’.

It’s a classic title for a classic album, with legendary producer Guy Forrester (OMD, The Real People) weaving his magic into The Exiles garage wall of sound. The Exiles are not just concerned with punk, reggae music features heavily on their new album with the dub-style mix of Meltdown and the skanky middle-eight break of ‘Alphaville’ and their frantic take on Jimmy Cliff’s legendary ‘The Harder They Come’ firmly planting a red, gold and green flag at the albums summit.

Live The Exiles are something else. Thousands up and down the country from Edinburgh to London have witnessed the pure energy of the band in action at hundreds of gigs up and down the country including lucrative supports with PJ Harvey, Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine, Sham 69, GBH, UK Subs, Gallows, The Damned and many more.

Are you ready for The Exiles?

'I like it. Nice punk stylings' - Jonathan Ross, Twitter

'Alive and kicking and at their best, twisting and turning and leaving the listner begging for more' - 'Scream For Apathy City EP' review, Mark Campbell, News And Star

'Addictive garage punk rock' - Lights Go Out Fanzine

'Born to be wild, but there is melody too, They are as driven as ever to create fast hard music' - Roger Lytolis, News and Star

FLESH EATING FOUNDATION
Flesh Eating Foundation lurk somewhere in the dark spaces between industrial, punk, metal and electronica. Sometimes they rock, sometimes they experiment, sometimes they break stuff.

Hailing from the grim and grey Midlands of the UK, they were born in the 70’s, moulded by the music of the 80s, pissed off by the nineties and making music about it all in the new millennium.

Chaotic and hugely entertaining electropunks Flesh Eating Foundation have recently announced a deal with Glory and Honour Records. Their recent release ‘So Yeah’ is available on CD, collectable vinyl and digital formats and includes remixes and unreleased songs. ‘So Yeah’ has already proved a hit in the clubs and on the airwaves with its speaker troubling sonics and oh so catchy ‘kick ass chorus’.

The band includes the enigmatic masked frontman ‘The Judderman’, the Deaf-Blind Zombie ‘Jon. E. Smoke', Uber guitarist ‘Mash’ and visual prankster ‘Crooknose’.

Flesh Eating Foundation also have three albums available on the back of self-released EP’s. ‘Seethe’ (2007) and ‘Purging’ (2008) are both released on CD through Rebco Records and also digitally available through iTunes and the usual download stores. ‘Dead Shall Rise’ (2010) is a co-release through Rebco and Sonic Entrails Records.

Flesh Eating Foundation have shared the stage with Skinny Puppy, Atari Teenage Riot, Attrition, Sheep On Drugs, Angelspit, Kunt and The Gang, and many others.

'Reminiscent of the 80’s industrial pioneers, yet with far more technology on their side, Flesh Eating Foundation have somehow managed to capture the spirit of an age and made it their own'. (8.5) Terrorizer

'Psychotic beats and schizophrenic vocals have afforded them a fierce reputation' - Sean Palfrey Dominion/Terrorizer/truecultofheavemetal.com

STATE CONTROL
Infamously named after Carlisle’s state controlled brewery of old and emerging as one of Cumbria’s premier young punk band and a force to be reckoned with, State Control hit as hard as a concrete slab. Their energetic live shows have earned them support slots for the likes of GBH, UK Subs, Strawberry Blondes, Section 5 and The Vibrators to name but few.

State Control are currently in the process of recording their debut LP and will be showcasing these songs live.

CABBAGE F*CK
Born from a sleepy village due to boredom, Cabbage F*ck were formed. This 2 piece play psychedelic blues punk with ditties including ‘Sodomy At The Jubilee’, ‘Deep Space Cabbage F*ck’, ‘Aunt Bessie’ and another one sung in French about a rabbit down their trousers, of which they have just filmed a video! They are a bit like the White Stripes gone very very wrong, and the drummers a bloke!

They will be playing a short set. This will be their first live gig and could possibly be their last, so get down early!

Whole Lotta Led - The Brickyard, Carlisle - Friday 29th June 2012   Friday 29th June 2012
Music In Progress Presents:
WHOLE LOTTA LED

• The UK's ONLY full time professional Led Zeppelin tribute band.
• Approved by Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin’s legendary guitarist.
• The biggest Zep tribute in the UK.
• Recommended as one of the UK’s top tribute bands by ‘Classic Rock’ magazine.
• Performed over 1,000 shows throughout the UK.

When Led Zeppelin reformed in December 2007 for a special one-off show at London’s O2 Arena they caused a media frenzy, with millions of applications for the 20,000 available tickets.

For a lot of people this may have been the first they had heard of the band, as in their heyday they shunned TV and never released singles. Despite this they became the biggest rock band of the seventies, and quite probably the greatest rock band of all time.

Rumours that the success of their O2 show would tempt them to stage a full tour have been quashed by singer Robert Plant who wishes their legend to remain intact.

Despite disbanding in 1980 after the untimely death of their drummer John Bonham, Led Zeppelin’s reputation and legacy of incredible songs continue to survive and appeal to an ever increasing audience of fans who in the absence of the original will have to make do with the UK's ONLY full time professional Led Zeppelin tribute band, Whole Lotta Led.

From humble beginnings thirteen years ago the Gloucestershire based band have progressed to playing major venues throughout the country, some of which Led Zeppelin themselves actually played.

Whole Lotta Led are no ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ lookalikes, they concentrate on the music which is performed with a collective enthusiasm and dedication that is second to none.

Whole Lotta Led are undoubtedly the hardest working Zep tribute in the UK, and possibly the world, playing over 100 gigs a year to enthusiastic audiences of all ages throughout the UK.

The current line up has been together for nine years now and consists of Nick Ferris on guitar, Geoff Hunt on bass, Graham Twist on drums and Lee Addison on vocals & harmonica. The band recently celebrated their 1,000th gig.

Their shows consist of songs from the entire Zeppelin back catalogue including the all time classics ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and of course ‘Stairway To Heaven’, the band also regularly include a selection of Led Zeppelin’s acoustic numbers in their shows.

Given the thumbs-up by no less a guitar god than Jimmy Page himself, Whole Lotta led are THE Led Zeppelin tribute band.

Doors: 8pm. Onstage: 9pm for two sets.
Admission: £10.00 advance / £12.00 on the door. Ages 14+. Please see entry policy for info.

Your Demise

  Monday 2nd July 2012
YOUR DEMISE
LAST WITNESS
AS LONG AS WE LIVE

“Relentless, confident and excellently executed. Your Demise are putting their money where their mouths are. 9/10” - Rock Sound

“Stacked full of huge tunes. The quality of this album is not cannot be debated. 8/10.” - Metal Hammer

“UK Hardcore mob spread their wings in impressive fashion 4/5” - Big Cheese

Your Demise, one of the UK's hardest-working and most-respected bands are about to enter their own glory days having just released their new album The Golden Age. It's a fearless summary of modern punk rock all tied up in the band's unique style, and the year ahead will see YD leaving the basement scene behind and bravely breaking new ground, starting with a stint on prestigious Australian festival tour Soundwave, before headlining across Europe in March and the UK in April, where they topped the bill of the Rock Sound Impericon Exposure Tour.

“The Golden Age is the most accurate depiction ever of who we are as a band and as people,” says vocalist Ed McRae. “If we could have written an album like this from the beginning then we would have. And recording it was very smooth – it all happened very quickly because we're now better at integrating all our influences.”

And being able to represent those influences – the energy of SoCal skate punk, the brutality of East Coast hardcore and the big-hearted melody of the finest old-school pop-punk – more fluidly than ever is what will catapult Your Demise above and beyond.

If The Golden Age has its roots in Your Demise's arm-long list of achievements – at time of writing the only continent they've not toured is Antarctica; they've ripped up massive festivals such as Download and Reading and Leeds; they're as comfortable recording BBC sessions as they are turning a venue upside down; their last album 'The Kids We Used To Be' (Visible Noise) captured the attention of press and TV internationally – then it also provides a clear road-map of the band's sky-high ambition.

The record features guest appearances from You Me At Six's Josh Franceschi and letlive.'s Jason Butler, as well as David Wood from Down To Nothing and Terror, Theo Kindynis from Last Witness, Ajay Jones from Brutality Will Prevail, Louis from Breaking Point and Dannika Webber from Evarose, a spread which shows the respect YD command worldwide.

The next 12 months will see YD again taking the fight internationally, with confirmed touring stints in Australia, Europe and North America and a busy summer of festivals off the back of the Rock Sound Impericon Exposure Tour.

John Cooper Clarke

  Friday 12th October 2012
JOHN COOPER CLARKE

What can you say about our John?

Born in 1949 to George, an engineer and Hilda, an unpublished poet, John spent his childhood growing up in Salford, Lancashire.

After teenage years as a Mod, John served a few jobs including an apprentice engineer, a tailors assistant, a lab technician at Salford Tech, where he was interviewed by another Manchester hero Tony Wilson, for Granada TV and also a lead type compositor. After a stint living in Dorset, John returned to Manchester and started properly on the path for which he would become most famous for, his poetry, working at cabaret clubs and tough venues around the city.

His biting, satirical, political and very funny verse delivered in his rapid-fire performance style resonated with the punk movement that had begin to pick up speed in the late 70s and saw him begin to draw huge crowds in his own right after touring with most of punk’s seminal and ground breaking bands including Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks, The Fall, Elvis Costello to name but a few. Joy Division were proud to open for JCC on numerous occasions. (New Order later supported him on their first joint Australian tour).

A figurehead for the movement and all that it encompassed, he became the “Punk Poet”, “The Bard of Salford” who found himself as one of the leading voices of punk and youth culture of the late 70s. Live, he would find himself performing to thousands across the UK, crowds gathered with open eyes and ears gazing up at his distinctive, and now iconic visual appearance (tall and thin with a mess of black hair, black sunglasses, drainpipe trousers and cuban-heeled boots) all transfixed as he worked through a catalogue of work taken from his four studio albums and numerous singles.

The decline of punk also saw a decline in John the man. He spent most of the 80s with a serious heroin addiction which saw his output wane dramatically. A tough battle which thankfully saw him kick the habit in the early 90s.

So what of John now? Aside from being a key component of the punk movement which has shaped countless bands since and being a key orator of British society during this time, his mark is indelibly seen in today’s pop culture. Aside from his fashion style spawning a number of copy-cats that stroll past you in pubs and clubs all over the country, his effect on modern music has been huge. His influence needs only to be heard in the satirical and keen social observations of the songs of bands like The Arctic Monkeys (Alex Turner cites JCC as a huge inspiration and John’s work appears in the sleeve of one of their singles as well as Turner apparently having a JCC tattoo), Reverend and The Makers (John duetted with lead man John McClure on the b-side of the band’s huge hit single ‘Heavyweight Champion Of The World’) as well as platinum selling Plan B (another keen fan, asking John personally to appear in his directional film debut "Ill Manors", which is out in May 2012, as well as appearing on the soundtrack). Clarke's recording of "Evidently Chickentown’ was also used in the penultimate closing scene of one of modern TV’s most famous and respected television shows, The Sopranos. JCC featured on BBC Radio 4’s Chain Reaction in August 2011 being interviewed by none other than New Order’s Peter Hook, John then interviewed Kevin Eldon a week later. Classic radio.

The revival of the 70s punk phenomenon over the last few years has seen a whole new generation clamouring over John’s work and watched his star rocket once again. Continuing to write new work from his Colchester home, He has a plethora of new poems and monologues which he performs solo, alongside his best known works such as Beasley Street and Evidently Chickentown. His shows are always packed and his audience always leave ecstatic.

At the time of writing John has just finished a successful tour of New Zealand and Australia. Proving that his words transfer world wide.

He hopes to produce his first new book for over 25 years in 2012. The perennial best seller, Ten Years In An Open Necked Shirt.

JCC has his own film Evidently John Cooper Clarke on BBC 4 TV in the UK in June 2012. He continues to present shows on the UKs leading digital new music station BBC 6 Music (Upcoming every Sunday through May 2012.) He appeared as his younger self in the award winning Ian Curtis biopic Control. He has made a multitude of recent UK and Irish festival appearances including Glastonbury, Latitude, The Green Man, Electric Picnic and many others. He also tours throughout Europe and Australasia.

No bigger accolade and platitude of his work is that 3 of his poems are now in the GCSE syllabus, including the remarkable Twat. He is studied by many A level students and his poetry is prolific within UK and Irish University courses, all ensuring that he will be forever ingrained in the psyche of Britain’s new youth.

One of Britain’s best loved and most important poets and performers, John is as vital now as he was then; He’s not going anywhere. Catch him live at The Brickyard on Friday 15th October.

Doors: 8pm.
Admission: £12.50 advance / £15.00 on the door. Ages 16+. Please see entry policy for info.

"A majestic debut" - The Fly

"Brit-folk's new voice" - NME

"A serious new talent" - The Sunday Times

"Even with the guitars turned up, the poetic sensitivity of the man showed no signs of slacking” - The Times

The first thing you notice is the voice. Haunting and sublimely otherworldly, it stops you in your tracks proving that sometimes the intoxicating simplicity of a single voice is all you need to make an impact. With Benjamin Francis Leftwich, that hypnotic, breathy voice is the reason for it all. Not just your average singer-songwriter then.

Growing up on a diet of Rolling Stones and Nina Simone, Benjamin discovered Bob Dylan and Elliot Smith in his teens, starting work as a solo artist at 18 and beginning to write what now makes up his debut album ‘Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm’.

After releasing his debut EP ‘A Million Miles Out’ at the end of 2010, he quickly found himself on the most prestigious playlists around as Radio 1DJs Zane Lowe and Fearne Cotton fell for Benjamin’s assuming charms. He was also added to XFM’s Evening Playlist, while Jo Whiley made Benjamin’s track ‘Atlas Hands’ one of her Tracks of 2010 and he was also asked to record a live session for Radio 2’s Dermot O’Leary. Benjamin’s version of ‘Rebellion’ by Arcade Fire has since been downloaded over 30,000 times.

Benjamin’s stunning second EP, ‘Pictures' led to tour support with Noah & The Whale, the lead track from the EP made Hottest Record In The World on Zane Lowe’s radio show and playlisted for the Radio 1 ‘In New Music We Trust’. Last Summer Benjamin’s debut album ‘Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm’ debuted winning critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, NME and Radio 1. His most successful year to date ended with a fully sold out UK tour in the Autumn.
